Entry 2:
The children have been working super hard in this last week, writing poems based on ones we have read together and learning lots about Ernest Shackleton's Endurance mission across Antarctica. We have read a book called 'Shackleton's Journey' by William Grill during guided reading to support this learning and the children have really enjoyed the dramatic events of the expedition!
In maths we have now moved onto a short unit on addition and subtraction; mainly revising the column methods the children have learnt in Years 3 and 4 before we move onto some new learning in our next unit of multiplication and division. As always we are following the White Rose Maths scheme so if you have a minute, the free downloadable parents units will support this learning at home.
Year 6 have brought home a maths revision book to support them in their preparation for SATS. This is a really comprehension workbook should you wish to work with them home to support their learning and all the answers are in the back for marking! (Please note we do not need to see these books in school and will not be able to mark them for the children)
I am pleased to announce that everyone has their Young Voices permissions and ticket orders in now, and we are going to begin learning the songs at school very soon ready for January 16th and our big night in concert!
Entry 1:
Welcome back!
After a lovely summer holidays, Owl class are back working super hard on their new topic all about Ernest Shackleton and Antarctica. We will be learning about his perilous mission to Antarctica, the geography and landscape of Antarctica and some of the research that happens there today aboard the Halley VI Research Station.
In maths we will be following the White Rose Maths topics as laid out in the curriculum section of our class page; starting with Place Value. There is a great parents section with downloadable workbooks should you wish to continue your child's maths learning at home.
We are currently writing our own versions of a poem called 'The Dreadful Menace' which links brilliantly to our Antarctica topic. This was originally used in an advert for the 2014 Winter Olympics and the children have been working hard on similes, alliteration and symbolism in preparation for writing their own poetry.
Swimming will continue on Wednesdays and PE will remain on Thursday afternoons until Christmas. Spellings will be on Mondays for the entire year.
