Class Blog 2025-26

Autumn Term

13th February 2026

We have made it half term! I hope you all have a wonderful week off and manage to spend some quality time together as a family.

Our topic next half term is 'Early Islamic Civilisation' and I have send out a homework project around 'The Silk Road' which I hope you all enjoy working on.

30th January 2026

Continuing our work on 'Earth and Space', we have been learning about gravity this week; what it is, how it works and why it is different on different planets. We have also been looking at satellite images of our planet, Earth, and discussing the human and physical geography which you can see from these images.  In our writing, we are moving onto non-chronological reports about our solar system using our own research, and in maths we will be moving forward into our 'area, perimeter and volume' topic at the start of next week.

23rd January 2026

After a busy and tiring week with Young Voices last week, we have enjoyed a calmer and more 'normal' week in Owls class this week! In science we have started looking in detail at our solar system and the different celestial bodies which we share our galaxy with; the planets, asteroids, comets, stars and moons.  In literacy,  we have been writing descriptive pieces based on the planet of 'Pandora' from the film Avatar, and in maths we have been working hard on decimals to 2 and 3 decimal places.

16th January 2026

We have had the best time at Young Voices this week! Thank you to all our families that came and watched us have the best night ever!

9th January 2026

Happy New Year! After a wonderful Christmas break, the children have returned fresh and ready to learn. Our topic this half term is 'Earth and Space' and we will be learning all about our solar system, the planets, stars and galaxies. Our core text will be 'Cosmic' by Frank Cotterill Boyce and we will be using this for our guided reading lessons to support comprehension skills.

Year 6 will be completing their 'Height and Weight Checks' with the school nurses this week and any information which comes from this will be sent confidentially to your home addresses. We do not have anything to do with the running of this and we do not get any of the information from it - this will come directly from the Compass team to you.

17th December 2025

We are almost at the end of our Christmas activities and the children have had an amazing time singing their carols at the concert last week, watching Tom's Midnight Garden at the theatre in Birmingham, eating their delicious Christmas lunch and wearing their (very jazzy!) Christmas jumpers to school today! As always, the children did themselves proud at all of these events and we are (as always) very proud of their behaviour, effort levels and attitudes towards everything they do.

28th November 2025

A very tiring week for Owls this week as we have completed our maths, reading and GAPS (grammar, punctuation, spelling) assessments this week. The children have worked super hard and should be really proud of themselves for such wonderful results.  As always, if we have any concerns about your child's progress or attainment we will contact you to discuss this and put a plan in place to support; if you hear nothing, assume the best!

21st November 2025

Years 5 and 6 have been working extra hard this week on some really tricky fractions work. I have been so impressed at how well they have persevered and managed to achieve some amazing outcomes despite finding some the work extremely challenging. Great work Owl Class!
We have started our new core text for this half term: Holes by Louis Sacher and the children are enthralled by the story so far. We are writing letters home from the main character, Stanley, to his family from Camp Green Lake and have been learning how to use parenthesis and semi-colons to improve our work.

We are still swimming this half term and we have seen amazing progress from all our swimmers - the top group are now working on survival skills and will require long sleeved/full leg pyjamas for their lesson next week. I can't wait to see them all jump in with their clothes on next Wednesday!

14th November 2025

Our prep for Young Voices continues this term and Owl's homework is to practice the songs at home until they are word perfect ready for our performance on January 13th!

22nd October 2025

As our first half term comes to an end,  Owl class have continued working hard and showing high levels of effort in their lessons, despite the long eight week slog to the October break! After half term, our ancient Greek topic will continue, as will our science topic on forces.

This week we have been writing our own Greek myths based on the many we have read this term as part of our topic. Many many monsters have been slain by Greek heroes and an awful lof of cities and princesses have been saved in Owls class this week!

Our maths work has moved onto fractions, and although this is usually not a favourite area of maths for many, the children have been working hard and doing brilliantly as always. This unit will continue for a few weeks after half term, offering the children a chance to consolidate their new learning and improve their confidence with fractions.

I hope you have a lovely half term break and look forward to seeing all the children on the 10th of November!

14th October 2025

This week we have been finishing off our maths unit around multiplication and division with some consolidation lessons focused on multiplying and dividing by 10, 100 and 1000.  The children have started their final writing unit of the half-term and will be writing their own Greek myth based on our reading of Theseus and the Minotaur and King Midas.  Our history lesson this week has asked the questions 'Was the Athenian democracy a true democracy?' and we have also compared our modern UK democracy to the system used in ancient Athens.
All the children who have taken part in their 'Bikeability' classes and assessments have done brilliantly and should be very proud of themselves - the assessors have had nothing but praise for their hardwork and excellent behaviour.

9th October 2025

4 of our Year 5 students attended the Princethorpe College Maths Challenge this week. They worked hard and represented the school amazingly well! We are so proud of you boys!

3rd October 2025

We have had great fun experimenting with paper helicopters to test air resistance this week!

22nd September 2025

The children have completed their baseline SATS papers this week so that we can help as much as possible in the year leading up to their end of year 6 tests.  Year 6 parents will be given these scores on Parent's Evenings to facilitate our discussion around progress, attainment and targets.

Year 5 parents; we use these tests to ensure we are covering the areas of the curriculum which will best support your children.  You will not receive the scores for these tests but will still get the chance to discuss your child's progress and attainment.

16th September 2025

This week, Owls Class have been continuing their work on the Ancient Greeks - learning about Greek city states and drafting their non-chronological reports about Greek gods. We have created charcoal images of a Greek theatre production of Daedalus and Icarus, carried on with our place value topic and completed science experiments on both friction and gravity! Busy busy busy!

9th September 2025

KS2 visited the Houses of Parliament to learn about democracy, how our country is run and we even got to watch a debate in the House of Commons!
