Class Blog 2024-25

2024-25

Summer Term

Week 4

This week in our guided reading sessions, we discussed Chapter 25 of our key text, iCosmo. In this chapter, Cosmo was 'paralysed with indecision'. We thought about Cosmo's dilemma and then created a 'thought alley' to show his thoughts and feelings about the events in the chapter. It was really interesting to see the conflicting thoughts and understand how he felt confused, or 'paralysed with indecision'.

Week 3

In literacy this week we have started our next writing unit, The Ridge. We loved watching the exciting video of a mountain biker scaling a mountain and then racing back down. We talked about the importance of vocabulary choices in our writing and how up-levelling our vocabulary makes writing more interesting and engaging for the reader. We had lots of fun using a thesaurus to up-level our vocabulary.

Week 2

This week, we have been really trying to improve our scores on Times Table Rock Stars. Lots of our Year 4 children are now reaching 25/25, which is such an achievement! Well done, everyone!

Week 1

This week, we started our new topic: Mountains, Rivers and Oceans. We learnt about the mountain ranges and the rivers all around the world.

Spring Term

Week 13

Happy Easter Everyone!

Week 12

In our DT lesson this week we designed and made our Egyptian Shadufs. Lots of us faced problems along the way and had to adapt our designs to make our shadufs work. It was a great lesson for teamwork and perseverance.

Week 11

We have been practising tying different knots this week. This is all in preparation for our DT project, where we will be making an Egyptian Shaduf. The children were all very determined to learn the different knot types and Hugh did a great job of demonstrating the knots he knows.

Week 10

This week, in Science, we learnt about the digestive system. We all really enjoyed the activity where we sent a chocolate cake through our DIY digestive system to make poo!

Week 9

It’s Science Week this week and we had a visit from Kidz Fit. They taught us all about our bodies and how we can keep them healthy through exercise. The workshop was absolutely amazing and everyone had lots of fun while learning a lot about healthy bodies.

Week 8

We have had such a busy week this week! On Monday, we invited our families in to see our Egyptian Museum. We proudly showed off our incredible homework projects and told our visitors lots of facts about Ancient Egypt - they were all really impressed and had lots of lovely things to say about the children’s fantastic knowledge.

On Thursday, we celebrated World Book Day. We dressed as our favourite book characters and joined in with a West End in Schools workshop where we Tod the story of Alice in Wonderland through dance.

Week 7

We started learning about a balanced diet in science this week. We talked about the different nutrients our bodies get from different foods and how important is it to have a range of different foods in order to keep our bodies healthy.

Week 6

This week in literacy, we wrote poems inspired by the Ancient Egyptians. We learnt about rhyme patterns and alliteration, before putting together our ideas into a poem. Here's one of our poems below:

Week 5

It's been a very busy week this week in Kingfishers! We have been busy practising for our assembly, which was incredible, and we went on a trip to Milton Keynes to see the fantastic Horrible Histories show, Awful Egyptians. The show was brilliant and we all really loved seeing all the things we've learnt about come to life in the show - we also learnt some new facts!

Week 4

This week we learnt about the gruesome process of mummification. The children absolutely loved learning all the gory details and they all created a very detailed step by step guide to mummification. We also learnt about why mummification was so important to the Ancient Egyptians and their beliefs about the afterlife.

Week 3

This week we finished our first writing outcome of 2025. We all really enjoyed writing our stories based on the short film, Tadeo Jones. The children's writing was amazing and looks absolutely brilliant on our new display.

Week 2

In history this week, we have been learning about different ancient civilisations and plotting them on a timeline. It helped us see just how long ago the Ancient Egyptians lived and how long the civilisation survived. We really enjoyed using the timeline in the hall to help us locate the different civilisations.

Week 1

We have had a wonderful first week of the Spring Term. We have started our new Geography and History topic on Egypt and are all very excited to learn more about the fascinating country.

Autumn Term

Week 13 & 14

We have had a very busy last few weeks of 2024. We have created some wonderful illustrations for the poem 'T'was the Night Before Christmas' during our art lessons and we have all participated in a wonderful Christmas Carol Concert for the community.

We hope you all have a wonderful Christmas and we'll see you in 2025!

Week 12

We have just completed our Santa dash! Lots of excited children with very rosy cheeks running around the village. Well done everyone!

Week 11

In science this week, Kingfishers did an investigation into how the distance between an opaque object and a light source affected the size of the shadow it cast. We ever plotted our results onto a line graph!

Week 10

We had a great time in Science this week, using mirrors to redirect light around a lego maze. It was quite tricky, but a lot of fun!

Week 9

This week is Anti-Bullying Week and Kingfishers did an amazing job with their class assembly, teaching the rest of the school and their parents all about how to recognise bullying and what to do if they see it happening. Well done, Kingfishers!

As well as performing our class assembly, we also took part in the school's Children in Need fundraising this Friday and came to school in our Pyjamas! It was a very comfy day, raising money for an incredible cause.

Week 8

We have had a DT week, this week. We have designed and created our own military drums, inspired by the Parliamentarians and the Royalists, and then composed a 'Military Tattoo' to accompany a video of the Battle of Edgehill re-enactment.

Week 7

We finished our topic learning this week on the English Civil War. We used sources to make inferences about how the war ended and then acted out the demise of King Charles I.

Week 6

We have had a wonderful week this week in Kingfisher's class. We learnt more about the Battle of Edgehill and used primary sources to help us infer information about the battle. We also looked at quotes from different people and had to work out how reliable we thought their information was. We learnt about bias and how that can affect a sources reliability.

We also had Parents’ Evening this week. It was lovely to share all of our hard work with our families - I think they were all very impressed!

Week 5

Kingfishers have had a very busy week. We have finished our amazing adventure stories, investigated how sound waves can be directed and learnt how to use roman numerals.

During our guided reading sessions, we delved into one of the character's brains from our class book 'The Wizards of Once'. We thought about what the character might be thinking at this point in the story and then created a 'thought alley' for our character to walk down and hear all of his thoughts.

Week 4

During our guided reading lessons this week, we looked at an article all about British Sign Language. We had to use our inference skills to answer questions about the article, and we discussed why facial expressions and moving your mouth is an important part of sign language. After that, we had a go at learning some British Sign Language and joined in with the signed version of one of our favourite songs, 'Sing'.

Week 3

We had the most amazing guided reading lesson this week. We focussed on developing our oracy skills and had a great time discussing the characterisation in our class reading book, The Wizards of Once.

It was wonderful walking around the class, jumping into the deep conversations about the book that the children were having. They were fantastic at using the sentence stems to help them ask and answer questions. Well done, Kingfishers!

Week 2

We have had a very busy week this week. We have continued our learning on sound in our science lessons and investigated whether the length of string on a paper cup phone affected the volume of the sound heard at the other end.

We also had lots of fun in our P.E. lesson when we had to do lots of different balance challenges with our group.

Week 1

Welcome back!

We have had a brilliant first week in Kingfishers. We have started our new topic, a local history, and had fun using atlases to locate major cities in the UK. During science, we started our learning about sound. We loved experimenting with all the different instruments to investigate how they made sound.
