Summer

 

Maths

At The Priors School, we follow the White Rose scheme of learning.

This term, both year groups will focus their learning on money, time, shape and statistics. Year 3 pupils will also look at mass and capacity and fractions, whilst Year 4 pupils will focus on decimals and position and direction.

We practise our mental arithmetic skills daily.

 

Literacy

In our literacy lessons, we will be writing a diary inspired by the short film 'The Catch'. We will also be writing a story inspired by 'The Nothing to See Here Hotel' and a set of instructions on how to raid an Anglo-Saxon Settlement.

We will use these writing opportunities to explore vocabulary, grammar, punctuation and spelling objectives across both of the year groups.

 

Guided reading

In our guided reading sessions, Kingfishers will explore many different texts and extracts. There will be lots of time for reading independently and discussing what we have read as a class.

Our key texts during Summer Term are 'The Nothing to See Here Hotel' by Steven Butler and 'How to be a Hero' by Cat Weldon.

 

Topic

Our Topic this term is 'Anglo-Saxons, Vikings and the Battle for England'. This will cover our History and Geography lessons.

 

Science

During the summer term, we will complete the science learning on 'Plants' before moving onto 'The Human Body' and 'Forces'.

 

RE

RE will be taught by Mr Emms on a Tuesday Afternoon

 

PSHE

At The Priors School, we follow the Jigsaw scheme for our PSHE learning.

This term, we will be working on the 'Relationships' and 'Changing Me' puzzle pieces. 

 

DT

During our DT day in the first half term, we will be learning about the history of flight. We will then design and create our own model aircrafts.

 

Art

On Wednesday afternoons, Kingfishers will practise football.

On Friday afternoons, they will build on their fitness skills.

Spring

 

Maths

This term, both year groups will focus their learning on the next steps of multiplication and division, length and perimeter and fractions. Year 3 pupils will also look at mass and capacity whilst Year 4 pupils will focus on decimals.

We practise our mental arithmetic skills daily.

 

Literacy

In our literacy lessons, we will be writing a setting description inspired by our class text “Escape from Pompeii”.

We will also be writing non-chronological reports about volcanoes and towards the end of term 3, we will be using the short film "Lava" to write a newspaper report.

We will use these writing opportunities as a vessel to explore vocabulary, grammar, punctuation and spelling objectives across both of the year groups.

 

Guided reading

In our guided reading sessions, Kingfishers will explore many different texts and practise answering questions on these using their VIPERS skills. There will be lots of time for reading independently and discussing what we have read as a class.

Our key text during term 3 is “Oliver and the Seawigs” by Philip Reeve and Sarah McIntyre.

 

Topic

We will begin the term with geography and our topic is "Natural Disasters" where we will be exploring volcanoes, earthquakes, tsunamis and everything in between.

After half term, we will move onto our history topic "The Roman invasion of Britain".

 

Science

The units we will be covering in Science over the spring term are "States of Matter" and "Plants".

 

RE

In RE we will be answering the key question “What can we learn from religions when deciding what is right and wrong?”

 

PSHE

At The Priors School, we follow the Jigsaw scheme for our PSHE learning.

This term, we will be working on the "Dreams and Goals" and "Healthy Me" puzzle pieces. 

 

Art

Kingfisher Class will take part in lessons which explore formal drawing and sculpture skills like line, mark making, shape, form, balance and structure, but they will also just as importantly explore how it feels to make art. They will explore how they can appreciate a sense of challenge, and a feeling of trying things out without fear of failure or “wrong or right”.

 

DT

In the second half of the term, we will be making a model bridge during our design and technology lessons. We will need to research, plan, make and evaluate our designs.

 

PE

On Wednesday afternoons, Kingfishers will have their swimming lessons.

On Thursday afternoons, they will take part in dance lessons led by KITS Academy.

 

Autumn

 

Maths

At The Priors School, we follow the White Rose scheme of learning.

This term, both year groups will focus their learning on place value, addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. The children in Year 4 will also look at area.

We will also be practising our mental arithmetic skills daily.

 

Literacy

During the first half term, we will be writing a short narrative based on the clip “Ride of Passage”.

We will also be writing extended narratives based on the story of “Stone Age Boy” by Satoshi Kitamura.

Towards the end of the term, we will be writing a leaflet persuading people to come and live in a Stone Age village.

After the half term holidays, the children will base their writing on our class text "The Iron Man" where they will write a descriptive wanted poster for the main character as well as some poetry inspired by "The Coming of the Iron Man" by Brenda Williams.

We will use these writing opportunities as a vessel to explore vocabulary, grammar, punctuation and spelling objectives across both of the year groups.

Our key text for term 1 will be “The Wild Way Home” by Sophie Kirtley and in term 2, we will be reading "The Iron Man" by Ted Hughes.

 

Topic

For the entire autumn term we are looking at our history topic “The Stone Age to The Iron Age” where we will be exploring what life was like in prehistoric Britain. We will ask key enquiry questions to deep dive into all three ages and look at daily life, tools, food, farming and everything in between!

 

Science

In science lessons we are learning all about rocks and soils. We will be comparing and grouping together different kinds of rocks based on their appearance and simple physical properties.  We will also be looking at how fossils are formed and recognising that soils are made from rocks and organic matter.

We will then move on to look at forces and magnets when we return after the October break.

 

RE

In RE we will be answering the key question “Why do people pray?” and will explore prayer across Christianity, Islam and Hinduism. We will discuss how, why, when and where people pray and look at the impact prayer has on the lives of those who pray. We will also explore why festivals are important to religious communities with a special focus on Diwali, Hanukkah and Christmas as these all fall within term 2.

 

PSHE

At The Priors School, we follow the Jigsaw scheme for our PSHE learning.

In term 1, we will be working on our first puzzle “Being Me in My World”. As a class we will take part in lots of activities where we will cover topics such as working as a team, caring for others feelings and how we can make an impact in our school community.

In term 2, we will complete the "Celebrating Difference" puzzle piece.

 

Art

During our art sessions, we will be working with charcoal to create gestural drawings. We will be looking at the work of artists who use charcoal as well as using this medium ourselves. We will be taking inspiration from Stone Age cave paintings and will develop our skills in our sketchbooks.

 

DT

In the second half of the term, we will be looking and food and nutrition in our design and technology lessons. Our learning will be linked to our topic and we will research food seasonality and availability in prehistoric Britain before baking an Iron Age bannock!

 

PE

On Thursday afternoons, Kingfishers will take part in hockey lessons led by KITS Academy.

On Friday afternoons, Kingfishers will have their “Ball Skills” unit delivered by Mrs Wynne.
